The Clear Aligner Therapy Treatment Process
Consultation
During your initial consultation, your dentist will determine if clear aligner therapy is right for you. First, we’ll examine your oral health to check for gaps and crowding, and ensure your gums are healthy enough for treatment. You’ll also go over your smile goals with your doctor and decide on a treatment plan that fits your needs and lifestyle.
Impressions or Digital Imaging
Your dentist will then create a model of your bite with digital imaging technology or traditional molds. Once those are complete, your dentist will make any necessary adjustments before sending them off to our trusted dental lab where they will custom craft your first few sets of aligners.
Fitting & Next Steps
Once we receive your clear aligners, you’ll return to the office, where your orthodontist in Lawrenceville will check to ensure they fit just right, and make any needed adjustments. Your dentist will provide you detailed instructions about how to wear your new aligners. Most patients will wear each set for 2 weeks, and between 20-22 hours per day. Every 6 weeks or so, you’ll return to our office to pick up your next several sets of aligners and to ensure your smile is making the proper progress.
Before & Afters
A smile is worth 1,000 words.
How do clear aligners work?
Clear aligners utilize a series of custom-crafted aligners that gradually straighten your teeth over time. Each aligner tray is worn for about two weeks, and will gently shift your teeth closer to their ideal placement. Depending on the severity of the misalignment, treatment can take anywhere from several months up to two years, though most patients wear their clear aligners for about a year.
Are clear aligners safe?
Yes! All aligners are made of BPA-free, medical-grade clear plastic for your comfort and continued health and well being.
Are clear aligners faster than traditional braces?
While the length of treatment can vary based on each patient’s individual needs, clear aligner therapy can often provide quicker results than traditional braces. Because the aligners push on all teeth, instead of pulling or pushing on each tooth individually like with traditional braces, they can dramatically, but gently, shift your teeth faster. However, to achieve the results you’re looking for in the least time possible, it’s important to follow your dentist’s instructions for wearing your custom-made clear aligners.
What is the difference between clear alignment therapy and traditional braces?
While traditional braces rely on metal or ceramic brackets that are secured to each individual tooth and connected by metal wires, clear aligners gently and discreetly shift your teeth with barely noticeable plastic trays. Patients also find clear aligners to be more comfortable than traditional braces, because there are no sharp points to cause irritation or discomfort. Plus, clear aligners are easily removable so you can quickly take them out for meals, photos, and other functions, and place them back in at any time. However, clear aligners aren’t right for everyone. If you’re struggling with more complex issues like a malpositioned jaw or severely misaligned bite, braces are a more versatile and powerful type of orthodontic treatment.
How much do clear aligners cost?
The cost of clear aligners can vary from patient to patient. A variety of factors, like the aligner brand you use and the insurance you have can affect the cost of your treatment. To find out how much you’ll pay for clear aligner therapy, schedule a consultation with your dentist.
What Types of Clear Aligners Do We Use?
We offer two types of clear aligners: ClearCorrect and Reveal. ClearCorrect aligners are a type of clear aligners that straighten misaligned teeth as an alternative treatment to braces. They're excellent for straightening teeth and are almost discreet, unlike traditional metal braces that are brazen and might make you feel self-conscious
These aligners are made from multi-layer medical-grade plastic and contain a special timeline, making them more comfortable and efficient than other clear aligners. After consulting with your orthodontist, they’ll decide how many sets of ClearCorrect aligners you need and arrange their manufacture and placement.
We also offer Reveal aligners, which are another type of clear aligner. Reveal aligners by Henry Schein dental lab fit tightly over the teeth and gradually realign them until straight. They’re made from a special plastic that’s strong but flexible and invisible to the undiscerning eye. They have a tight and precise fit and are especially ideal for kids and teenagers with fully-developed permanent teeth.
What Alignment Issues Can Aligners Solve
Clear aligners are immensely beneficial for various dental issues. Some issues these aligners solve include tooth crowding, where the teeth are crowded in one region, ruining your smile. Aligners fit into the crowded teeth and gradually straighten them into their correct positions and alignments in a matter of months.
Aligners can also address large spaces between the teeth, known as diastema. The aligners will direct the spaced-out teeth to come closer to each other, allowing proper spacing and a beautiful smile. It’s a more permanent solution for diastema, especially compared to temporary ones like dental bonding and veneers.
Your orthodontist may also recommend aligners for malocclusions like open bites, underbites, and crossbites. The aligners will move the front teeth to their correct positions, giving you a proper bite and a beautiful smile with perfectly straight teeth. Our aligners can also rectify tilted or rotated teeth and gently realign them to face the right direction.
Am I a Good Candidate for Clear Aligners?
You can be a good candidate for clear aligners if you suffer from mild to moderate malocclusions, mild crowding, and bite issues. They’re also ideal for patients who are completely non-allergic to the plastics used in the clear aligners. Those allergic to certain plastics will have to consider alternative treatments, particularly conventional metal braces. It’s also worth noting that clear aligners are only suitable for individuals with permanent teeth and are unsuitable for children with baby teeth.
You may also be a good candidate for clear aligners if you enjoy proper oral health and don’t suffer from dental decay, gum disease, and gum infections. Patients with such dental complications require prior treatment before they can get aligners. Aligners are also an excellent option if you engage in physical sports because you can simply remove them when playing and put them back after.
We wouldn’t recommend clear aligners for patients who have trouble following instructions. Keeping to the orthodontist’s instructions is important for ensuring the effectiveness of the treatments. Instructions include when to wear the braces, how to clean them, and what to avoid when wearing them.
